The editor and publisher of SOF News is John Friberg.
John Friberg is a retired Command Chief Warrant Officer (CW5 180A) with 40 years service in the U.S. Army Special Forces in active duty and reserve components. He has deployed multiple times to Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, South America, and other locations throughout the world during his military career.
After retirement from the military he worked as a DoD contractor for three years as a Counterinsurgency Advisor in Afghanistan (2012-2014) – specializing in COIN and Security Force Assistance for the COMISAF Advisory and Assistance Team (CAAT). He then worked as a contractor providing exercise support for USSOCOM (2015). Following that he worked as a military trainer – specializing in Security Force Assistance training for NATO service members in Europe and Afghanistan (2015-2017).
This was followed by once again providing support (role playing, scenario scripting, etc.) for SOF exercises (2018-2023). He worked overseas once again as a contractor (2024-2025). In November 2025, John finally retired for the 5th time.
In his civilian occupation (when not on active duty) he worked domestically and overseas in high risk areas as a security consultant specializing in personal protection, protective systems, and anti-terrorism. He holds a Certificate of Proficiency in Security Management from the University of Massachusetts – Lowell (one-year program) and a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree (ALB) from Harvard University concentrating in International Relations.
