The Pentagon has removed the names of four service members who died in Jordan and Iraq in the past week from the official list of casualties in the current Iran War. On Wednesday, July 22, the casualty list had 18 American service members killed during the war in Iran. By Thursday, it was reduced to 14 KIA.
Apparently, it seems the reason behind the change was that the Department of Defense decided to remove the four service members killed this past weekend from the list because their deaths occurred after President Trump declared a ceasefire in the war in April.
An Iranian strike in Jordan last Friday killed three soldiers and another soldier died in Iraq while an Iraqi missile was being detonated. The remains of the four service members were returned to the United States on Wednesday, July 22 in a ‘ramp ceremony‘ at Dover Air Base attended by President Trump SECDEF Hegseth, and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Caine. Although the Pentagon has revised the numbers to 14, President Trump continues to use the number of 18 in his public statements.

There appears to be a dispute over how the casualties are categorized and counted in the Pentagon database, with the Pentagon attributing the discrepancy to data issues while critics argue it reflects a policy decision.
This casualty database change has prompted members of the press and Congress to accuse the Pentagon of a lack of transparency and to some there is an appearance of political influence. The criticism has been significant and the Pentagon has not yet provided a detailed public explanation resolving the question.
