Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) passed the 20 year mark in 2026. It was officially activated as a component of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). The major organizations of MARSOC are:
The Marines have a long history of elite warriors going as far back as World War II when the Marine Raiders were established (SOF News, 7 April 2023) by the United States Marine Corps to conduct amphibious light infantry warfare. One example of the Marine Raiders in action in World War II is the Raid on Makin Island in the Pacific.
After World War II and before 2006 the Marine Corps had elite units – among them, Marine Recon (Division Recon) and Force Recon. Marine Recon operated closer to the front lines for division commanders while Force Recon conducted deep, independent, behind-the-lines missions. Both units saw significant service during the Vietnam War.
In 2003 Marine Corps Special Operations Command Detachment One was created as a pilot program to assess the value of Marine special operations forces permanently detached to USSOCOM. Det One was disbanded in 2006 and succeeded by MARSOC.
In February 2006 MARSOC was officially established. Currently it has these four major subordinate units:
- MARSOC Headquarters
- Marine Raider Training Center
- Marine Raider Support Group
- Marine Raider Regiment
The Marine Raider Regiment includes the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Marine Raider Battalions. These battalions have four Marine Special Operations Companies (MSOC) each having Marine Special Operations Teams (MSOT). The Marine Raider Support group includes the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Marine Raider Support Battalions. MARSOC headquarters and forces are stationed at Camp Lejueune, NC.
There are over 120 military occupational specialties found within MARSOC, with a total of 3,500 assigned personnel. Some of the more common job descriptions within MARSOC include:
- Critical Skills Operators (enlisted)
- Special Operations Officers
- Special Operations Independent Duty Corpsmen (medics)
- Special Operations Capabilities Specialists
- Combat Service Support Specialists
One of the more important training exercises MARSOC conducts is the RAVEN exercise. (SOF News, 16 Jul 2021) These pre-deployment training exercises usually take place twice a year. The purpose of the RAVEN exercise is to train and evaluate Marine Special Operations Companies and Marine Special Operations Teams. The exercises present the Marine Raider units the opportunity to prove their proficiency in a large number of skill sets that may be employed during future deployments.
Over the past two decades MARSOC has evolved from a relatively small addition to USSOCOM into a mature special operations component capable of conducting the full spectrum of special operations missions. Marine Raiders have deployed extensively to Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Africa, and the Indo-Pacific, supporting counterterrorism, irregular warfare, and partner-force development missions alongside other SOF elements.
