Europe and NATO
NATO Allies Disappointed. President Trump made some remarks last week that were not well received by members of NATO that sent troops to Afghanistan after 2001 – responding to Article 5 of the NATO alliance. On Thursday, January 22, 2026, President Trump, talking about NATO, said:
“I’ve always said, will they be there if we ever needed them? That’s really the ultimate test. I am not sure of that. We’ve never needed them, we have never really asked anything of them. You know, they’ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan, or this or that, and they did, they stayed a little back, a little off the front line.”
Many of the NATO partners responded to the President’s comments, stating that they sent in their special operations units to work side by side with U.S. SOF. They countered that the NATO allies did take significant casualties during the 20-year long conflict. The U.S. lost 2,402 service members in Afghanistan according to DoD. In total, non-US NATO member and other partner nations lost almost 1,200 military personnel. Some of the highest numbers were from the UK (437), Canada (150), France (90), Italy (53), and Denmark (44). (sources differ on the exact counts per country) Trump’s remarks brought swift reactions from many of the NATO countries like United Kingdom, Italy, and others.
Europe’s Collective Defense? The Atlantic Council’s Transatlantic Security Initiative has a real-time NATO Defense Spending Tracker that shows how allies are contributing to collective defense and the development of real military capabilities. Norway is leading the alliance (including the U.S.) in defense spending per capita for 2025. “NATO Defense Spending Tracker”, Atlantic Council, January 2026. The list below shows the top five:
- Norway, $3,191
- United States, $2,469
- Denmark, $2,400
- Finland, $1,478
- United kingdom, $1,164

SDF and Ceasefire? Last week the Syrian Transitional Government (STG) and the Syrian Democratic Front (SDF) based in northeast Syria (Kurdish-held territory) signed a ceasefire agreement. However, clashes have not stopped between the two parties. Kobane (NSI map), in northern Syria is under threat of attack by the STG as well as several other cities. In the meantime, the United States continues its new-found relationship with the new Syrian regime. Once again, the Kurds find that there are No Friends But the Mountains. (SOF News, 2018)
ISIS Prisoners – From Syria to Iraq. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) launched a new mission (CENTCOM, Jan 21, 2026) to transfer ISIS detainees from northeastern Syria to Iraq on January 21, 2026, to help ensure the terrorists remain in secure detention facilities. Up to 7,000 ISIS detainees could be transferred from Syria. Many of them have been held for years in facilities controlled by the Syrian Democratic Front (SDF). This is taken place as the STG is advancing into SDF held territory and thousands of ISIS detainees have escaped in the chaos.
Disarming the Kurds in Syria. The Syrian Democratic Front (SDF) has yet to negotiate a meaningful settlement with the Syrian Transitional Government (STG), yet the move to disarm the SDF and incorporate their territory is ongoing. Read more in “The Silent Disarmament of Kurds”, Small Wars Journal, January 21, 2026.
