National K-9 Veterans Day – March 13

March 13 marks National K-9 Veterans Day, a day dedicated to honoring the military working dogs (MWDs) that have served alongside U.S. service member in war and peace. On May 13, 1942, the United States Army began training dogs for military use. The Army’s program became known as the War Dog Program, later referred to as the K-9 Corps.

During World War II, a private citizen, Mrs. Arlene Erlanger, established a program called Dogs for Defense in 1942. This group, along with the American Kennel Club and some dog breeders, trained dogs for military use. Many everyday citizens donated their dogs to the program. The Dogs for Defense program procured over 18,000 dogs for miltary service. The first Dogs for Defense dogs were used in North Africa. Eventually, the Dogs for Defense program was taken over by the Army. The article “Dog Day Afternoon” listed under “References” at the bottom of this article provides an excellent description of the Dogs for Defense program.

The K-9 Veterans Day was created in 1987 by a Joe White, a Vietnam War veteran and K-9 handler, to honor the dedication of military service dogs. He chose March 13 to celebrate the day the U.S. Army created the K-9 Corps.

Since World War II, military working dogs have served across all branches of the U.S. armed forces. They have been used with military police units, counter-drug units, sentry operations, IED and mine detection, scout dogs, search and rescue, and messengers. With each conflict since World War II, their use has changed based on the type of warfare – whether large scale operations, counterterrorism, or counterinsurgency.

The MWDs have senses that humans do not have. Their sense of smell and hearing is much better than their human counterparts. A dog’s sense of smell is thousands of times more sensitive than a human’s. K-9s can hear frequencies up to 44,000 Hz, significantly higher than the human’s ability to hear. Their sense of “alertness” is much greater and more sustained than that of humans. Their biological and behavioral capabilities function as a “combat multiplier”- providing advantages that currently cannot be fully replicated by human soldiers or modern technology.

Some of the tactical and physical advantages of K-9s include being on alert for the proximity of enemy troops, access to narrow spaces and tunnels, and non-lethal deterrence. They are also a key morale booster for service members in conflict zones.

Dog handlers and their dogs have a unique relationships, many MWD teams spending days and nights together under a variety of conditions. In garrison, in field conditions, and in combat. MWDs assigned to airborne and special operations units parachute out of airplanes and rappel from helicopters with their handlers. They take to the water as well.

Most MWDs typically serve eight years before they reach retirement. Robby’s Law, which was passed in 2000, ended the practice of euthanizing MWDs at the end of their working career. This allowed for adoption opportunities for MWDs. Many of these military dogs transition to roles assisting veterans with PTSD.

Today, military working dogs remain a critical capability across the U.S. military and special operations forces. Special operations K-9 teams conduct tasks such as explosive detection, tracking, assault support, and reconnaissance. Highly trained dogs have accompanied U.S. forces on combat operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria, including high-risk direct-action missions.
